What is the "Human Voice"?

Let's talk about the human voice.

This idea of the human voice came up recently in a conversation with a colleague, and she asked me what people mean by writing in a human voice, or - even better - someone's specific voice. In the age of AI, it generally means any kind of script or writing that doesn't look like it was generated by some language model.

I always believed that writing in a human voice means reaching an audience in discovery of who they are and what they need. As I have mentioned many times in this space, my work with clients involves developing communications which include four essential elements to determine their voice: authenticity, accessibility, clarity, and empathy. Audiences recognize and expect them on an almost subconscious level.

This principle is just as true for speeches delivered live as it is for words being read on a screen. This isn't just about good writing; finding that human voice is where great strategy comes into play. Enormous amounts of time must be dedicated to understanding what someone really brings to the table. Look at origin stories, their journey over the years. How will you honor that legacy *and* embrace the future? From there, you can pick the storytelling thread which best aligns with your goals.

Humanity and storytelling have been inextricably linked since the beginning of time. When you write in the human voice, you inspire, entertain, educate... the sky’s the limit. That’s the power of storytelling.
